The invitation came a day after Mexican media reported that Mexico’s top law enforcement official, Luis Videgaray, had called for the government to investigate a report that Pena said he was trying to prevent his son, a member of Pena’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, from becoming president.
Pena Nieto has been criticized in the United States for his handling of the case, and has also been accused of being too close to President Donald Trump.
While Pena declined to confirm the report, his office said that he was in contact with prosecutors and that he had “no plans” to intervene.
Mexico has been rocked by violence in recent years as the country struggles to stem a drug cartel that has become one of the most feared organizations in the world.
Videgaray’s office said it was the first time that Penas son had been invited to the funeral.
Pena’s office also said Pena had invited his sister, his wife Marisol Videgará, and her children, Eulocio and Marisol.
The invitation said they would be “looking forward to the visit.”
A group of friends and associates of Penas father, Enrique Penalto, are being mourned at the funeral in Mexico, according to a statement by his office.

Pesa said in his invitation that the invitation “is an invitation for those who wish to attend a funeral for their friends or loved ones.”
Pena, who took office in 2009, is widely seen as a centrist who has steered Mexico through one of its most difficult periods of political upheaval.
He has also faced criticism for not taking more action against the cartels that have taken control of much of the country, and for his decision to allow the country’s drug cartels to get away with crimes, even as they continue to fight for their turf in other parts of the world, such as the U.S. and Europe.
Pablo Hidalgo, a prominent political analyst, said that Penal to have been invited was a “big mistake.”
Pesas son was in the same group of people as his wife when he was murdered in February 2018.
“He was not in a group that could protect him,” Hidalgonos said.
“Pena would not have allowed this.”
Hidalgono said that the President was too close with the former president.Pérez Peña was shot dead by gunmen on the way to a birthday party for his brother in the state of Chiapas in 2018.
